Common Questions
I want to get street trees for my sidewalk/block. Is this the right program?
Generally no. Trees 2020 is set up to assist property owners to purchase trees at a low cost and plant the trees themselves on their property (or plant them in local parks or other open space, with Parks Department approval). Contact the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program for information on how to apply for free street trees in your neighborhood at 401-368-5380, or visit www.pnpp.org.
Can a tree fit in my small back yard?
Yes. Trees come in all shapes and sizes so we can help you pick one that will fit in almost any yard.
I rent my apartment, can you help me get a tree for the yard?
Yes. We can help tenants, landlords and home owners plant trees.
Will the roots damage my sidewalk or driveway?
No. We can help you select a tree, and pick a spot to plant it, so it does not hurt either.
Am I responsible for planting the tree?
Yes. You can do it! Trees 2020 offers trees for purchase only, and advice on choosing the right tree for the right spot, and how to plant and care for it. However, we can connect you with a qualified company that you can hire to plant the tree for you if needed.
Will leaves be a problem?
No. All trees have leaves but we can help you pick one that won’t need a lot of raking.
How do I get the tree to my yard?
You will be able to pick the tree up yourself on Saturday mornings from a location in Providence. You must have a pickup truck. We'll help you load the tree, but you must have 2-3 people to lift the tree from the truck into your yard. You may also pay $20 (per tree) to have us deliver it for you during a weekday evening.
I would like to have a memorial tree planted in my local park. Can I do that through this program?
Yes. You can pay for a tree (1 1/2 inch diameter size) to be planted in a park, assuming it is approved by the Parks Department. Trees 2020 can connect you with the City Forester to find a location and select a suitable species. However, the Parks Department does not wish to have memorial plaques installed next to trees in our parks.
